Multiple Patterns Will Be in Play at La CrosseThe Big Bass Tour returns to La Crosse, Wisconsin, July 31 through August 2, and few venues on the schedule offer competitors more ways to pursue a money-winning bass than Pools 7, 8 and 9 of the Upper Mississippi River.Anglers can target smallmouth around wing dams, current seams and rocky current breaks, or they can leave the main channel behind and chase largemouth in shallow backwaters. Grass, lily pads, duckweed, wood and other cover will all be in play. That variety allows anglers to fish their strengths, but it can also make it difficult to settle on a single plan. For anglers who prefer current-oriented fishing, wing dams are a logical starting point. The upstream face, downstream side and outer tip can all hold bass depending on current strength. Less obvious seams created by points, closing dams, riprap and other obstructions should also receive attention. The best spot may be only a small section where bass can remain out of the strongest flow while feeding on bait carried past them.A Berkley Frittside is a strong choice for covering shallow rock. Its tight action and flat-sided profile make it especially useful when the fish have experienced substantial fishing pressure. Anglers can adjust the size to match the depth and should try to make contact with the structure whenever possible. Natural forage patterns are a logical starting point, with brighter colors providing an alternative when the water is stained. The shallow largemouth bite offers a completely different route to the top of the leaderboard. The Mississippi’s backwaters contain expansive fields of grass and pads, along with laydowns, reeds and isolated pieces of cover. A Berkley Swim Jig paired with a PowerBait Power Swimmer provides an efficient way to search grass edges and scattered vegetation. It can be fished quickly until productive cover is located and then worked more thoroughly through the highest-percentage stretches.A Berkley SlobberKnocker should also be on the deck. The bladed jig produces the vibration needed to call fish out of vegetation, and it can be worked around wood and other hard cover. Green Pumpkin Shad is a versatile starting point, while brighter baitfish colors may be better when the water has more stain. When bass are holding tightly to heavy cover, slowing down with a Berkley PowerBait MaxScent Creature Hawg may produce the tournament-changing bite. Its compact profile is well suited for flipping and pitching into thick vegetation, under overhanging cover and beside isolated wood. On a river with so much shallow habitat, small differences in vegetation quality, shade or water movement can make one piece of cover far more productive than everything around it.Then there is the frog bite. The Upper Mississippi is one of the country’s premier summer frog fisheries, and a Berkley Swamp Lord Hollow Body Frog belongs in every competitor’s boat. It can be walked through open pockets or brought across duckweed, lily pads and matted vegetation. Anglers should pay particular attention to points, holes, isolated clumps and places where two types of cover meet. Those irregularities frequently create the best ambush locations for larger largemouth. The abundance of productive-looking water can become a trap. It is easy to spend too much of the tournament running between wing dams, grass beds and backwaters without giving any one pattern enough time to develop. Current strength, water clarity, baitfish activity and healthy vegetation should help narrow the options. Once the right combination is identified, anglers should look for nearby water with the same characteristics. They should also monitor the live leaderboard closely. A bass that falls short of the overall lead may still be worth significant money during the right hourly period. With both largemouth and smallmouth available, along with so many productive patterns, opportunities can arise throughout each tournament day.Whether the winning fish comes from a wing dam, a grass line, an isolated laydown or beneath a backwater mat, the Upper Mississippi rewards anglers who fish their strengths while remaining willing to adjust. With $108,000 in guaranteed prizes and payouts, including a $20,000 overall grand prize, one well-timed bite could make the trip to La Crosse unforgettable.
